Is Sollerön on the verge of becoming a so-called Blue Zone?

by | June 20, 2024 | Current

We read and hear about areas of the world where people tend to live to be very old. These areas are called “Blue Zones.”
The most famous are the Nicoya Peninsula in Costa Rica, Sardinia, the Greek island of Ikaria and the Japanese island of Okinawa. All Blue Zones are therefore close to the water. For a while it was also said that people in the Caucasus grew very old thanks to eating a lot of yogurt!

When we read the statistics on population development in 2023 for Sollerön, one may wonder if Sollerön is on its way to becoming a “Blue Zone.” After all, we are also an island surrounded by water.
Many of us are in the age range of 75 – 79. The majority are 60+. There are also some who have passed the 100-year mark.

What could be causing this?
Is it nature, the fresh air, lack of stress and traffic jams, the nutritious diet with local eggs, fish from Lake Siljan and lean elk meat from the vast forests, or what is it?
The answer is that it's probably simply good to live here.

We also know that the population in Mora municipality is getting older. There will be a need for more senior housing in the near future. Stoltgården should therefore be expanded to meet the increasing demand. Properties will become vacant and more families with children will move in. Then the population will grow.
We know that the regrowth is good with many schoolchildren in school.

The figures for 2023 show that Sollerön has actually decreased by 16 people. We are just under 1700.
More deaths (24) than births (7). Net immigration is only + 1.
Unfortunately, the forecast for the coming years is a continued decline.

Read the diagrams and think about it during the summer.
